Hollywood Costume, the V&A’s major autumn exhibition sponsored by Harry Winston, gathered over one hundred of the most iconic costumes designed for unforgettable cinema characters over a century of filmmaking.
For the first time, Hollywood Costume unites classics from the Golden Age including Dorothy’s blue and white gingham pinafore dress designed by Adrian for The Wizard of Oz (1939) and Scarlett O’Hara’s green ‘curtain’ dress designed by Walter Plunkett for Gone with the Wind (1939). The latest Hollywood releases including Jacqueline Durran’s costumes for Keira Knightley in Atonement (2007) and Anna Karenina (2012) and Consolata Boyle’s costume for Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady (2011) will be on display alongside costumes worn by Kate Winslet in Titanic, Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver, Helen Mirren in The Queen, Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Rises and Daniel Craig as James Bond in Casino Royal.
To celebrate the opening of the Hollywood Costume exhibition, the V&A played host to guests from across the film industry at a black tie dinner, sponsored by ‘Jeweler to the Stars,’ Harry Winston. The dinner, held in the magnificent Raphael Gallery, was attended by Sir Paul Ruddock, Chairman of the V&A, Frédéric de Narp, Chief Executive Officer and President of Harry Winston Inc., exhibition curators Professor Deborah Nadoolman Landis and Professor Sir Christopher, along with film guests including, directors Tim Burton and John Landis, and actress Helena Bonham Carter CBE. www.harrywinston.com
