REFLECT(S) FRENCH WATCHES AND JEWELLERY

1 – “Reflet(s)”: an innovative introduction to the world of jewellery

The “Reflet(s)” collective exhibition organized in Paris by Comité Francéclat from Wednesday 29th May to Wednesday 3rd June 2013 in the Palais de Tokyo welcomed over 14,000 visitors.

The event hosted over 200 manufacturers, craftsmen and designers presenting nearly 500 pieces of jewellery illustrating the creativity, modernity and expertise of jewellery and high-jewellery and also the emotions and charm they generate.

Matali Crasset, a renowned industrial designer whose work is known and recognized all over the world, graciously accepted to be the exhibition’s patron.

The exact opposite of a conventional presentation, the exhibition’s layout offered visitors a journey of experience structured around different worlds.

The exhibition also paid tribute to people and professions, offering an introduction to a range of expertise with interactive workshops.

Over a hundred professionals (gouache specialists, gemmologists, stonecutters, stone setters, teachers and pupils in jewellery and high-jewellery teaching establishments throughout France) ran conferences, workshops and demonstrations: introduction to the science of gemstones, pearls and stones, computer-assisted design, jewellery manufacturing techniques, settings and more.

And the children were not forgotten: workshops run by professionals, teachers and pupils from jewellery schools were specially organised for them so they could design and then make their own piece. 250 children left with their own jewellery creation.

28-LALIQUE10 – Lalique: Les Ames Soeurs

Under the title “Les Ames Sœurs (Soul mates)”, Lalique is revisiting the myth of love and, in particular, the legend of Psyché and Eros.

A rich collection of around one hundred pieces, this new jewellery line has 8 lines: Psyché (Psyche), Ailes de Psyché (the Wings of Psyche), Eros, Flèches d’Eros (Eros’ Arrows), Les Ames Sœurs (Soul mates), Serpent (Snake), Pissenlit (Dandelion) and Muguet (Lily-of-the-Valley).

“Psyché”

The personification of the soul and of beauty, Psyche takes off for the starry skies, unfolding her wings like a caress, turning from princess in to goddess. One of Maison Lalique’s iconic figures, the butterfly serves as the thread linking this precious line: modular necklaces and chains, pendants, rings, earrings, bracelets.

For daywear, they are draped in red gold and paved in precious or fine stones (diamonds, sapphires, citrines, tourmalines) with matching coloured lacquer. For eveningwear, their white gold is paved with diamonds blue sapphires, black spinels, aquamarines, lapis lazuli and coloured lacquer.

“Eros”

The god of love, the symbol of freedom and master of his choices, Eros (or Cupid) astonishes with the power he uses to find a humble heart and his soul mate. Bearing the elixir of love and happiness, his arrow, like a ray of sacred light, reaches the heart of Psyche and sets both souls ablaze.

The arrow is the emblem of the “Eros” and “Flèche d’Eros” lines, comprising pendants, rings, earrings and bracelets that are completely white (white gold and white diamonds), two-tone (white and red gold paved with champagne diamonds) or in precious stones: yellow, red or white gold set with sapphires, emeralds and rubies with diamonds.

“Muguet”

Having escaped the snake and borne by a gentle wind (the zephyr) on a carpet of dandelions, Psyche comes to rest in a field of lily-of-the-valley in a pretty garden with a delicious fragrance.

An emblematic motif for Lalique, the lily-of-the-valley displays its small bells on necklaces, pendants, rings and earrings in white gold, white and red gold or yellow gold, a cascade of diamonds and precious or fine stones (sapphires, champagne diamonds, tsavorites, tourmaline, chalcedony, …) and mother-of-pearl. Its small bells choose pure white (moonstone) or unusual tones (lapis-lazuli, pink quartz).

11 – Mathon Paris: Demoiselle – Nénuphar – Arlequin

“Demoiselle”32-MATHON

Mathon Paris is launching a collection called “Demoiselle” and realized with the “plique-à-jour” technique which confers an Art Nouveau style to the dragonfly, emblematic motif of the brand.

Already used in the Byzantine Empire, plique-à-jour is a technique close to enamelling which enjoyed a renaissance at the beginning of the 20th century with the arrival of new artists from different horizons, branching out into the art of jewellery and using techniques that were, until then, reserved for other disciplines.

As a “Living Heritage” company, Maison Mathon is particularly concerned with preserving rare expertise and skills that may have a tendency to disappear. The technique of open-flame enamelling, which enjoyed its heyday in the Art Nouveau period, is today the privilege of a few masters of this French art.

Powder enamels are applied with extreme precision between the filigree made of precious material. The enamel is fired at around 850°C in a kiln; complex pieces can require twenty firings. The mastery of plique-à-jour resides in the particular nature of the enamel suspended between two metal filigrees with no support behind. The plique-à-jour allows the light to pass through a wide range of transparent or opalescent colours.

The “Demoiselle” collection uses this century-old expertise which toys with colour and light. As a ring or necklace, it is available in two versions: grey gold, blue sapphires and diamonds or yellow gold, tsavorites and diamonds.

“Nénuphar”

This new range is inspired by the water lily, characterised by its broad, flat, rounded leaves (greatly appreciated by frogs) and its delicate flowers that can be white, yellow, purplish or reddish.

As a ring, the leaves are in white gold and the flower opens its pink tourmaline petals.

“Arlequin”

A renowned character from Italy’s Comedia dell’Arte in the 16th century, the Harlequin became famous and easily identified by his costume of multi-coloured diamond patchwork.

The “Arlequin” range by Mathon picks up the principle of the Harlequin’s costume, dressing the gold in stones in more discreet colours.

The bracelet, also in ceramic, is adorned with a chequerboard in its central section and goes perfectly with the design on the dial, showing off the refined dazzle of the watch.

In white or black, the ceramic “Opéra” is not only reserved for sumptuous parties; it is an ideal companion for the active woman who wants to show-off her seductive side.

The flower bouquet adorning the dial is not only decorative; the turning flower at 6 o’clock marks the seconds. In harmony with the dial, a new very shiny, patent brown-taupe leather strap adds a touch of glamour.

“Trocadéro Chrono”, which lends its name to the famous district of Paris overlooking the River Seine and the Eiffel Tower, combines refined elegance, confirmed classicism and a suggested sportiness. In an elegant round case, the meticulously worked silver dial is cleverly designed: “Paris rivet” décor in the centre and striating on the outer area that highlights the Roman numerals and indices. The finely worked luminescent hands contribute to the watch’s perfect readability. Its chronograph functions are the perfect addition to the whole: 3 windows at 2, 6 and 10 o’clock indicate with precision 60 minutes, the hours until the 12h chrono and the first 30 seconds. Its oblong buttons and finely designed crown bear witness to the particular care taken to create this timepiece.
