GJEPC NEW HORIZONS IN LATIN AMERICA

…A Journey of Cultural and Economic Exchange

In the aim to expand its global footprint and foster stronger economic ties, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) embarked on a significant delegation visit to Latin America from 21 to 29 May, 2024. This strategic tour, led by Mr. Kirit Bhansali, Vice Chairman of GJEPC, marked a promising chapter in the pursuit of enhanced trade relations between India and the remarkable markets of Brazil, Colombia, and Panama.

Accompanying Mr. Bhansali were notable figures from the Indian gem and jewellery sector: Mr. Anish Birawat, Managing Director of Chain N Chains Jewels Ltd.; Mr. Shailesh Sangani, Founder of Priority Jewels; Mr. Anilkumar B. Virani, Director of M/s Karp Impex Limited and Partner at M/s Ethereal Green Diamond LLP; and Mr. Yash Shah, Partner at The Lalit Gems Co. & President of The Dia Box Inc., the US subsidiary of The Lalit Gems Co.

The journey commenced in Brazil, where key meetings were held to explore collaborative ventures and market expansion strategies. Among the highlights was a meeting with Mr. Ecio Morais, Director of IBGM, the organizer of the Feninjer jewellery show in São Paulo. Discussions revolved around the creation of a dedicated India Pavilion, promising a platform for Indian exhibitors to showcase their exquisite loose stones.

The delegation also engaged with the Monte Carlo group, the second-largest jewellery store chain in Brazil, and the SAUER Group, a prominent name in Brazilian jewellery. These interactions aimed at fortifying business ties and identifying new avenues for market penetration. Additionally, meetings with representatives from ESMEBRAS expressed a shared commitment to building robust bilateral trade relations.

In Colombia, the GJEPC activities were characterized by a blend of cultural exchange and strategic networking. A networking lunch with the Indian Ambassador to Colombia, Mr. Vanlalhuma, provided a forum to discuss the promotion of Indian jewellery in the Colombian market. This was followed by tours of local jewellery markets, where delegates gained valuable insights into contemporary trends and consumer preferences. These activities highlighted the potential for Indian jewellers to meet the growing demand for high-quality, diverse jewellery products in Colombia. The discussions also focused on encouraging participation in the India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) and upcoming Buyer-Seller Meets.

The final destination of the tour was Panama, where the delegation sought to solidify the presence of India in the LAC region in the gem and jewellery sector. The Indian Ambassador to Panama, Costa Rica & Nicaragua, Dr. Sumit Seth, highlighted the importance of strengthening economic ties between India and Panama during an event organized in collaboration with the GJEPC.

A networking dinner provided an invaluable opportunity for Indian and Panamanian companies to explore avenues for trade enhancement through the adoption of the latest technologies. This event facilitated the forging of new connections and the discussion of potential collaborations with leading Panamanian companies.

Reflecting on the successful tour, Mr. Vipul Shah, Chairman of GJEPC, expressed pride in the strides made during the visit of the delegation. He emphasized the significance of showcasing India’s craftsmanship and the diversity of its gem and jewellery sector to new markets, laying the groundwork for enduring partnerships. “The future is bright,” he remarked, envisioning a flourishing exchange of culture, commerce, and trade in gems and jewellery between India and the dynamic regions of Latin America.

Mr. Kirit Bhansali echoed this sentiment, highlighting the rich cultural and economic potential of Brazil, Colombia, and Panama. He extended heartfelt gratitude for the warm hospitality received and the collaborative spirit encountered throughout the tour. “Together, we are poised to achieve remarkable milestones that will benefit our industries and peoples,” he noted, anticipating a future of shared growth and enduring partnerships.

The visit of the GJEPC delegation to Latin America represents a truly significant move towards enhancing gem and jewellery exports of India, strengthening economic relationships, and promoting growth in this vital industry.
