RIMA KHATIB’S CREATIONS REFLECT MODERN SOCIETY’S “ABUNDANCE OF POSSESSIONS”

“A Game of Hide and Seek” is the theme of an artistic exhibition held recently by Designer Rima Khatib at Le Gray-Downtown Beirut, during the “Beirut Design Week 2013”.  In this showcase, Khatib presents her latest art works under a unified collection dubbed “Cache-Cache”. Khatib’s new creations are influenced by the contemporary society’s opulence of options, with people ending up with having more “things” than ever before, and the allocated space for storing possessions increasingly shrinking. The Cache-Cache represents various design elements and uses a variety of material and techniques to interpret the “hide and seek” focus in a unique way. The fusion style, mixing the industrial with the handmade, allows the collection pieces to be an exceptional delight for the viewers.

Standing like a fine sculpture in any area of your home or office, the Cache-Cache is the new generation of coat-hangers. Working to make it discreet and reflect her first-of-a-kind concept, the design developer made the coat-hanger with a naturally evolving skin, which serves as a thin screen to hide the hanged items. This exclusive touch perceives the Cache-Cache as a natural evolution of the coat-hanger to look more attractive. The designer treats her new collection as living creatures that evolved to gain specific attributes, similar to the human body in its anatomy.

Variants of the Cache-Cache display a richness of features and styles in harmony with the space it is meant to be adorning. Rima Khatib created 7 initial variants from this concept: Corporate, Rolling, Charleston, Tarbouch, Orchard, Courtesan and Stream.

The standard design of a Cache-Cache item stands tall at around 2 meters in height and a diameter of 55 cm. Some variants of these Coat-hangers have their footing hidden, thus allowing them to allocate a shoes storage space. The central wooden column is a fixed element in all designs and the four hooks on this hanger are meant to hold each more than one garment. The skin of a Cache-Cache can be chosen from a variety of material and can be available in a multitude of colors and dimensions. Khatib expects her Cache-Cache collection to expand rapidly and continue its evolving process.

Rima Khatib’s work says a story that goes beyond the esthetics and daily utility of her designs. The art creations of this architect are living things that are meant to mirror lively emotions and feelings. Pieces produced by Khatib are given their final form with great attention to detail and flawless craftsmanship. She recently decided to follow her passion for design and work exclusively on the creation of furniture, and launched her first collection in June 2012. Some of her pieces can be seen at Espaces Ephemeres, Eklekta and most recently Carousel.
