MICAM 2019

A comprehensive global event for the footwear industry.
MICAM, the world’s premier footwear show celebrated its 50th anniversary with an excellent edition from 15-18 September welcoming pioneers and professionals in the industry from major international markets at the Rho Fiera venue in Milan.
MICAM introduced the latest innovations in footwear from Italy and other countries including France, Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Japan, China… The exhibits were distributed over six halls in a clean layout separating the different manufacturing categories, enabling visitors to surf in an easier way and to operate more efficiently; luxury shoes and modern ones, sports shoes and practical daily ones, children and men shoes.

Foreign buyers from various nationalities visited MICAM to find out what’s up in the sector. In addition to the collections on exhibit, the fair organized, as usual, a high-level educational program in cooperation with specialists in the field. The program included a series of lectures by leading trend forecasters WGSN, tackling the most important topics affecting the future of the industry. The lectures were presented in English as they were addressed to a wide international audience. They run throughout the exhibition days in the Fashion Square; an area specially designed to welcome attendees in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.
The lectures included studies and researches in materials and colors, and were focused on the age group influencing fashion trends. It was evident that it is the youth category that inspires new trends in fashion, providing, through their determination, desires and interests, the outlines for future designs. This segment of consumers, born with a mobile in hand, and who cannot imagine life without connection with the outside world, has largely united in terms of vision towards a large number of topics; they are in constant communication, exchanging views, discussing about almost everything, sharing views of many things, rearranging priorities, and forcing all industries to keep up with this change in order to sustain and grow.

This generation puts sustainability on top of its priorities’ list. The dangers facing the environment today have turned them into rebels rejecting all what causes climate change, air, land and oceans pollution, and what alters the balance of nature. They care about the source of the materials from which the goods are made. They tend to reduce those harmful to the environment and opt for the use of the other recycled or recyclable ones. They have become more caring for the age of the piece they want to buy, and seek cross-seasons ones, relatively simple and made from materials from plant or sustainable sources.

“MICAM the greatest show” evening

Sustainability has topped the list of topics raised by the exhibition. Lectures and studies have highlighted the impact of sustainability on the purchases expectations, and thus how to translate it practically in future products in order to reduce waste in both materials and energy. All the players in the sector, including designers, manufacturers, developers, wholesalers, retailers, shop owners and journalists, have benefited from the educational workshops. The sustainability wave is not only a trending fashion; it is rather a path and an urgent need.
Returning to the activities that accompanied MICAM, we recall “MICAM the greatest show” staged on Sep 15; a fantastic musical featuring the biggest hits from 1970 till date and an award ceremony. MITTELMODA Fashion Award 2019 was staged on Sep 16; the international contests’ finalists have shown their collections on the catwalk to be presented with awards right after.

MICAM provided a dedicated space for emerging designers to showcase their creative abilities to visitors from major international markets; their designs remarkably matched their keenness to choose environment friendly materials, comfortable designs, and attractive colors.
The 88th edition of MICAM, the international footwear exhibition promoted by Assocalzaturifici, came to a close yesterday at the Rho Fiera Milano. The event was attended by 44,076 trade visitors, including 60% from abroad, who were able to peruse a wide range of exhibits offered by 1303 companies. www.micam.com
