HONG KONG WATCH & CLOCK FAIR – A TRIUMPH OF TIMELESS ELEGANCE

The 43rd HKTDC Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and the 12th Salon de TIME have once again proven their unparalleled influence in the world of horology. Held from 3 to 7 September 2024, these prestigious events attracted 17,000 buyers from 106 countries and regions, making Hong Kong a global watch trading hub.

Despite an unforeseen disruption caused by typhoon Yagi, the fairs stood resilient. The organizers—Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association Ltd, and The Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries Ltd—demonstrated remarkable adaptability by extending the fairs opening hours and encouraging the use of the innovative EXHIBITION+ hybrid model. This seamless blend of physical and digital engagement enabled exhibitors and buyers to continue their business discussions and explore opportunities until September 14th, ensuring that no connection was lost.

The halls of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre buzzed with activity, drawing a diverse array of buyers from Mainland China, Japan, Southeast Asia, and beyond. This year, Salon de TIME and the concurrent CENTRESTAGE fashion event opened their doors to the public for the first time, attracting over 15,000 visits. This inclusive approach allowed horology enthusiasts and fashion aficionados to immerse themselves in a world of exquisite craftsmanship and cutting-edge design.

HKTDC Deputy Executive Director, Sophia Chong, noted “The Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and Salon de TIME brought together over 700 exhibitors from 15 countries and regions. In addition to welcoming international buyers, this year’s Salon de TIME was fully open to the public for the first time, providing a one-stop sourcing platform and creating new business opportunities. Exhibitors were able to learn about customer preferences immediately, which will help strengthen product design and research and development, enhancing competitiveness in the future.”

As the fair progressed, a survey conducted by the HKTDC provided invaluable insights into the future of the watch industry. The results revealed an optimistic outlook, with 42% of respondents anticipating growth in overall sales over the next 12-24 months. Emerging markets such as ASEAN, the Middle East, and India were highlighted as key areas of potential growth, while traditional markets like Japan and Taiwan also showed promise.

In terms of product trends, smartwatches continue to dominate, with 40% of respondents identifying them as the most popular category. However, there is still significant interest in quartz analogue, mechanical, and digital watches, reflecting the diverse tastes of global consumers.

Sustainability was a recurring theme at this year’s events, with the introduction of the Green Solutions Suppliers label, a significant highlight. This new initiative, embraced by 30 exhibitors, made it easier for buyers to identify eco-friendly products. Amy Chow, Vice President of Gordon C & Co Ltd, shared her positive experience: “The Green Solutions Suppliers label helped attract buyers to our booth. Buyers from the Middle East and Southeast Asia were very interested in our eco-friendly watches. The business atmosphere is good this year. We expect that new orders at this year’s exhibition will increase by 10-20% compared to last year.

The fair also served as a platform for global businesses to forge meaningful connections. For instance, Stuart McGrath of Armoura Designs Ltd, an Irish jewelry and watch company, found new suppliers and secured significant business deals, including a green packaging solution, amounting to approximately US$110,000.

As the events successfully concluded, Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and Salon de TIME, set the momentum for the year 2024 to continue with an exciting lineup of autumn events. From the Hong Kong Electronics Fair to the International Outdoor and Tech Light Expo, the EXHIBITION+ hybrid model will once again facilitate global connections, driving the industry forward.

The exhibitions highlighted the evolving demands of a discerning market, as brands continue to innovate and adapt to emerging trends, the Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and Salon de TIME remain the ultimate platform for industry professionals and enthusiasts to converge and shape the future of horology.
