There is a moment, perhaps once every five years, when a watch stops me mid-sentence. Not because it’s complicated, God knows we’ve seen every tourbillon, every nano-coating, every “world’s thinnest”, but because it feels different. It carries an intent that bypasses the brain and lands somewhere in the gut, the EMERA CYBORG CY 06-1 is that watch!
I’ve been in this trade long enough to recognise the difference between a brand that manufactures mystery and a house that genuinely lives in the shadows. EMERA, founded in 2023 by Patrick Freiburghaus and Cyrano Deventhey, both Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève alumni, with a combined three decades-plus of mastery. They call their territory the “Empire of the Unseen” and that’s a clear mission statement.
Let’s start with the obvious, the CYBORG CY 06-1 is not a traditional watch and it doesn’t want to be either. Where most manufacturers hollow out a case and drop a movement inside, EMERA has inverted the logic. The architecture is the organ; four sapphire crystals (one domed above, two curved below, and a lateral window at six o’clock) expose the entrails of the calibre with surgical candour. You don’t look at the movement, you look into it.
At the centre of that mechanical theatre, lies a flying tourbillon, and 51 components weighing just 0.35 grams, making its silent 60-second revolution. At 28,800 vph, the in-house automatic calibre MRA 01-2 doesn’t beat, it resonates.
For a professional audience, the technicals matter. Grade 5 titanium mainplate and bridges, a gold oscillating weight, 44-hour power reserve, 100% Swiss-made, with finishing shared between EMERA’s own workshops and a tight circle of master anglage artisans. Every surface is finished by hand and that’s non-negotiable.
But the heart of this piece is not the tourbillon, it is the dial, or rather, what EMERA calls the “Living Armour”. 42 hand-set carbon scales, each one catching and fracturing light like a creature from a forgotten epoch. Form does not follow function, here, form is function. Around this dark, evolving skin, the bezel is set with 21 white diamonds (VVS clarity, approx. 2.00 ct). At CHF 625,000 + VAT, the price signals exclusivity clearly enough, but as a “stellar guide”, in their words.
The strap, in Sideral White rubber, continues the organic line: sculpted chevrons that mirror the case’s scales. The gold pin buckle closes the circuit between metal and flesh. It feels alive on the wrist. At 46.80mm x 56.60mm and 15.90mm thick, it’s substantial. But the 120-gram weight (strap included) is carefully judged, this is an artefact meant to be worn.
Now, the part that will interest our B2B colleagues most, the distribution. EMERA is not selling the CYBORG CY 06-1, they are selecting its owners. Five pieces, five individuals. You do not walk into a boutique, instead, you write to info@emerawatches.com and wait. The house decides if there is mutual recognition, this is not a transaction, it’s a pact, and it comes with lifetime watchmaking follow-up and direct access to the founders and craftsmen.
As Louis Ducruet (whose own collaboration with EMERA, the LD 01-1 Shadow Warrior, runs a parallel line of five pieces at CHF 395,000) put it: “Wearing an EMERA is commanding the Empire of the Unseen, and living it”.
I’ve seen brands try this tone before, most come across as performative, EMERA doesn’t. The product actually backs up the poetry, and the CYBORG CY 06-1 is not a reference to anything that came before, it is not a heritage reissue, it is not a safe commercial bet. It is, instead, a fusion of mechanical purity, architectural brutality, and organic strangeness that actually feels new.
Advice to the professional reader: watch this house! Freiburghaus and Deventhey are not building a collection, they are building a lineage, and if the CYBORG is any indication, the Empire of the Unseen will not remain unseen for long.
