TIME AND SPEED, REUNITED: BREITLING AND ASTON MARTIN PRESENT THE TOP TIME TRIBUTE TO THE ICONIC DB5

Some partnerships feel less like a collaboration and more like a reunion, that’s the case with  Breitling and Aston Martin, who have come together to unveil the Top Time B01 Chronograph 41 Tribute to Aston Martin DB5, the first timepiece born from the partnership announced earlier this year, and a tribute to one of the most iconic cars ever put on screen.

Introduced in 1963, the Aston Martin DB5 became shorthand for British design and cultural cool, a status only amplified when a Breitling Top Time ref. 2002 appeared on Sean Connery‘s wrist in Thunderball (1965), worn, notably, alongside the DB5 itself. It was the first Q-modified watch in the James Bond franchise, and a moment when speed and style spoke the same language. More than sixty years later, Breitling and Aston Martin revisit that exact intersection.

Originally created in the 1960s as Breitling’s answer to a younger, speed-driven generation, the Top Time returns here reinterpreted through material and craftsmanship rather than nostalgia alone. Wood-inlayed detailing, hand-coloured gradient leather straps, and refined dial work echo the tactile richness of the DB5’s cabin, translating the feel of driving Aston Martin’s classic grand tourer onto the wrist.

The cushion-shaped case, grooved corners, and mushroom pushers recall the silhouette of 1960s chronographs, while “squircle” subdials nod to the look of a classic dashboard gauge cluster. A wooden inner ring draws directly from the DB5’s steering wheel, and the hand-coloured leather strap mirrors the depth and tone of fine automotive upholstery, details that speak to a genuine dialogue between two design houses rather than a simple badge exercise.

As Georges Kern, CEO of House of Brands, put it, the aim was to “capture that sense of timeless style.” Aston Martin’s Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman echoed a similar sentiment, describing the project as a genuine exchange of ideas between two brands united by a shared appreciation for design and craftsmanship, resulting in a watch that feels contemporary today, yet built to endure.

The collection is offered across three limited editions, each interpreting the DB5’s legacy differently:

– Stainless steel with a silver dial (1,022 pieces), the closest in spirit to the original Top Time ref. 2002.

– Steel and platinum with a black lacquered dial (315 pieces), where the platinum bezel introduces added weight and contrast.

– 18k red gold with an onyx dial (250 individually numbered pieces), marking Breitling’s first-ever use of natural onyx, chosen for its distinctive depth and lustre.

As Breitling’s Head of Product Design Pablo Widmer noted, this is a chronograph where “form meets true function,” with the beauty resting in its lines, materials, and finishing.

Powering all three editions is the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01, a COSC-certified chronograph movement built on column-wheel architecture and a vertical clutch for smooth, precise operation, with a 70-hour power reserve for extended wear. Visible through the open sapphire-crystal case back, the movement is finished with a dedicated Aston Martin–engraved rotor, rendered in rhodium-plated steel or 18k red gold depending on the edition.

The Top Time Tribute to Aston Martin DB5 is available through Breitling boutiques and authorised retailers worldwide.
