CIBJO President Gaetano Cavalieri has been elevated to the rank of Grande Ufficiale (Grand Officer) within the Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana, the highest knighthood order of the Italian Republic. The honour represents the second-highest rank in the order, above his previously held title of Commendatore (Commander).
The appointment, conferred by decree of the President of Italy on the recommendation of the President of the Council of Ministers, was published in the official Italian Government Gazette on April 2, 2026. Dr. Cavalieri is one of just 22 compatriots recognised at this level.
Established in 1951, the order recognises outstanding achievements in science, literature, the arts, economy, public service, and social, philanthropic and humanitarian activities, as well as long and conspicuous civilian or military service.

Since his election as CIBJO president in 2001, Dr. Cavalieri has been a pivotal figure in global jewellery industry governance. Beyond his sector leadership—including a past presidency of the Italian Federation of Gold, Silver and Jewellery Wholesalers—he has served the Italian state as a consultant to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, chief of international relations at Confcommercio, delegate to the WTO on luxury industries, and board member of both Mondimpresa SCPA and the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade and Commerce.
The accolade underscores the growing recognition of responsible industry leadership at the highest levels of national honour systems, reinforcing the jewellery sector’s alignment with economic diplomacy and institutional service.
