Quite an exceptional show featuring a totally different aspect of the world of gemstones

For the first time one can ask what could Intergem, a show held once a year at Idar-Oberstein city in Germany, offer to a professional who visits every year at least ten shows where colored stones are but a complementary section?

Well, the show in Idar-Oberstein has an identity of its own and consequently the show has a lot to say. So exceptional and far different from any other, the show itself seems like a rare gem shaped by the hands of a great artist. Although its concept is simple, the pieces on show are not. The fair offers a world of stones of different colors, sizes and forms coming from many parts of the world with one thing in common: they are all cut in Idar-Oberstein, which in itself means: adding the great tradition of the city, to the beauty of the natural stones. With this added value each and every stone was able to reveal the most of its beauty and glow.

Separated into three halls, participant houses displayed their products, fruits of their labor and experience to a selected clientele, determined to acquire the best that can exist in terms of rarity, originality and perfection.

In the stand of GROH & RIPP, Mrs. Nicole Ripp, proud to represent one of the famous houses of the area, explains that they work with more than 120 different types of natural stones. The raw material being brought from various parts of the world like Brazil, Africa, and Asia, the final product is always unique pieces worked fervently by their masters’ lapidary in their workshops. A wonderful collection of Paraiba tourmaline is the pride of their stand.

Mr. Achim Grimm from Hermann Grimm KG, as for him, is proud to be the only lapidary working with Amber, and especially the Green Amber. A magnificent collection of various forms is showcased in his stand. A pair of faceted “drops” of almost 2 cm long and 1.20 cm large worth 260 Euros and the most surprising is its lightness. With Achim was present his son, who he proudly introduced as the family’s fifth generation.

The company Herbet Giloy & Sohne operating on the market since 1930 is one of the largest houses producing diamond jewellery. Mr. Daniel Giloy belonging to the third generation said that 250 people, master craftsmen, designer and others work in their company and that they provide a large client base in the local market and in other European countries such as Italy and Grand Britain.

Opal has never been as splendid as it looked on the stand of Imagem. A Master Lapidary himself and representative of the company, Mr. Chris Price tells his long story with these Black Opals sourced from Australia where their sole and unique mine exists. “Famous brands have started introducing Opals in their creations” he said with excitement. For him, Opal is an exceptional stone because it is the only stone with round crystals. Every stone is different from the other and it is difficult to find two identical to make a pair. And far from thinking that it is a cheap stone, the carat of an Opal may vary between 5 and 15.0000 Euros! And from this superior quality, Mr. Price shows a magnificent one featuring red lights inside, and which he calls the “Queen of all Opals”.

From Japan came the company “Root of Power” to present to Intergem visitors a selection of colored stones cut by the Japanese master Tomo Karino. Very pleased with the progress of the work during the show, Mr. Karino expressed his eagerness to participate next year but showing only one concern: “Next time I’ll bring a lot more big stones. Everyone here is big and there is a great demand for large stones which is not the case in Japan”, he said.

Several activities accompanied the exhibition including the presentation of the book “The Young Generation” by Bernt Munsteiner, an interesting book that features the work of Tom and Jutta Munsteiner in the recent years. A rare collectible published by Arnoldsche Art Publishers, and not to be missed!

From his side, Mr. Manfred Wild from the house Emile Becker presented a rare collection of objects made out of natural stones. Supplier of Royal Families since long, the company considers its presence at Intergem a must, although it had presented its latest collection to the loyal customers a few weeks before the show. Among the unique pieces he presented was a fully operative flute delicately worked with “the mother of crystals”: The Rock Crystal. To the surprise of the audience, Ulrike Trappe-Krieger played a musical performance of Beethoven’s Ninth, ‘Ode to Joy’ with the instrument. A unique art and music piece to discover.

“Fantasy Fishes” presented for the first time at the Intergem 2012. This workmanship is a completely new kind of crystal painting with a decorated external design. The motives are closely related to their natural paragons and their convincing colours are due to the principally used metallic paint.
