SALVATORE FERRAGAMO SPRING – SUMMER 2013 COLLECTION

Salvatore-Ferragamo-Women's-SS13-Collection-Look-PAG011

The poetry of vast spaces, wide horizons over the infinite sea and windswept dunes, lost in immense solitude. A snapshot of a woman with the indomitably free spirit of a gaucho. The modernity and style of her clothing display the duality of her personality: rigorous yet soft.

A hyper-constructed trench coat with a story to tell, a unique reinterpretation of the traditional riding coat. Modern tailoring that deconstructs conventional forms to awaken an entirely new perception. Jackets flared like a redingote and tops caressing the body are worn with trousers gathered round the ankles by thin criss-cross lacing, or a draping skirt held by a trench belt.

The combination of this sartorial rigour and highly refined femininity expresses freedom, by virtue of contrast: ultra-lightweight, three-dimensional lace dresses, embroidered leather pieces, summer boots with seductive weaving effects.

Saddle finishing evokes warm, sensuous luxury, while modern craftsmanship renders every object rare and precious. The sumptuous inner constructions rival the sartorial precision of the exteriors, the outerwear and skirts are made of cloth lined with soft leather. The elegance of their surfaces is enhanced by subtle curves and details drawn from the equestrian heritage. From the eyelets on the hand-stitched belt to the sandal designed around the metal part of a bridle.

The knitwear indulges in the use of sophisticated texture inlays. Dresses with layerings of hand made lace and mesh, nappa and tricot oversize T-shirts, double-sided garments in which chiffon meets leather in a spectacle of hand braided detailing. An intimate, private world reflected in a palette of neutral shades, from Linen to Champagne, Clay to Luna, Ash to Dorato – interspersed with the unexpected dash of khaki. Graphic touches of black ensure continuity between them.

Legs are sensually highlighted by the extraordinary cross between boots and sandals, cuissardes cut and profiled by extremely fine threaded braid. New sandals with nappa laces and bands fastened by buckles, or the high, open-toe crocodile sandal, raw and precious, made from a single cut of skin.

Over the arm, the authentic luxury of soft hobos threaded with exquisitely fine braiding and graced by details evoking the saddlery trade. Unique items like the ultra-soft bags with handcrafted raised embroidery, and the rustic calf travel bag.

The jewellery comes in a surprising mix of materials: warm touches of leather combined with hard metal. Chains in thick texture are layered around the neck and wrists. The bracelets and necklaces elegantly reproduce equestrian details and horse hooks.

The force of modernity is constructed upon a legacy of great tradition. Reinterpreting the concept of exclusive craftsmanship, in the world of Salvatore Ferragamo.

Exceptional sophistication and modernity are the terms best suited to define this collection, in which every model is a sheer masterpiece of craftsmanship. The saddlery trade served as the inspiration behind this collection and the range of its models are never purely decorative but incorporate functionality as well. This new message on luxury is in keeping with the principals of the Salvatore Ferragamo DNA and is characterized by its extraordinary blend of natural textures and metal details, raw and precious materials, neutral colours and graphic finishes.

The constructions are complex, as the ultra-flat sandal, which utilizes the metal fittings from a horse’s headstall to wrap the foot with bands of soft nappa leather fastened together by buckles reminiscent of bridles. The leather Opanca sole – a tribute to one of the Maison’s classic icons – matches the colour of the upper and is profiled by exquisitely small interwoven threading, a leitmotif of the entire collection. Exclusive pieces feature the open-toe crocodile ankle boot with an entirely hand threaded sole, made out of a single cut for heel and upper, or ultra-feminine models like the ankle pump that fastens at the ankle with ultra-soft leather straps. Or again, the summer boot re-invented in a range of sensual boot-sandal hybrids, cuissardes and new sandals that accentuate the leg with the geometrical cut and equestrian style criss-cross lacing. The exquisite finishes applied to vegetable tanned leathers, such as cowhide, suede and nappa, as well as exotic skins like crocodile and python lend an allure of warm and sensuous luxury. All these products are enhanced with metallic accessories especially distressed to lend the appearance of a natural wear and usage. The palette of colours spans a range to include impalpably neutral tones and sidereal greys, from Champagne to Luna, from Ash to Corda and Desert, and also includes elegant modulations of dark green, as in Fossil, the metallic gleaming of Dorato and the graphic intensity of Nero.

A new dimension within the world of luxury is opened up by the quintessence of virtuoso craftsmanship and extreme sophistication in the choice of leathers, with special attention to those which have been vegetable tanned. The unmistakable references to equestrian images are evoked by details on bags with textured surfaces for adventurous women. Like the oversized hobo (in her hand), which has the metal fitting of a bridle on the rib. Coming in natural feel cowhide, this is covered with extremely fine double-threading (handcrafted “micro-mignon”) and in an even more exclusive version has entirely hand-stitched embroidery creating a slightly padded effect. Smaller and designed to wear like a bandolier is the vegetable tanned leather postman. This has a very feminine allure and features jacquard fabric profiled with mini-studs, embroidered leather with a padded effect or python. In the over dimension, there’s a soft bag made of calfskins (matte or with a sumptuous suede feel) with nappa piping, while the bowling bag is based on a traditional travel bag and updated with smooth leathers or 3D embroidery. This is a concept of relaxed elegance that’s also expressed in models like the small saddle bag combining canvas and leather or coming in cowhide decorated with metal plates.

An exclusive mixture of sophisticated lines, craft stitching and fully handmade threading, all of which revisited in an absolutely modern style in a palette of cool and sophisticated tones: Luna, Desert, Clay, Ash, with bold digressions into Fossil (dark green), Dorato and Nero.

LA, the home of perpetual summer ablaze with radiant and cool colours, with the infinite nuances from the ocean and the swimming pools cerulean blue, a city of pulsating vitality, is reflected in the silk scarves in the SS 2013 collection. Refined and rich with sumptuous detail, they explode in the brilliance of intense yellow, a slightly orange red, turquoise and a delicate shade of pink. A strangely electric aura emanates from patterns featuring flowers and felines, palm trees, jungles and exotic vegetation, one of the Maison’s stylistic hallmarks. Tropical fish swim in idyllic waters and an origami-butterfly has wings in the colours of the jungle. And again, floral foulards graced by exquisite finishes explicitly evoke California and its explosive nature with dahlias and hibiscuses. And as nearby Hollywood could hardly be ignored, we see cinematographic elements set amidst luxuriant bougainvilleas. Lastly, a hypnotic snake, the Chinese star sign for 2013, has its skin decorated with beads and tiny patterns. Salvatore Ferragamo reinvents a summer foulard rich in symbolism and iconic details merging tradition and modernity with ineffable mastery.

The scarves and stoles collection is a luxurious and variegated array of designs that reproduce foulard prints with brilliant and soft colours that also create light and lurex effects. Knitwear items are enlivened by 3D effects, sophisticated tricot work and gorgeous texturing. A collection of ultimate summer elegance then, made of silk but also blends of cotton, cashmere and impalpably lightweight wools. And lastly, pareus and caftans, featuring exclusive prints, and soft beach towels. Extreme sophistication defines the bijoux items, which combine metals, coloured resins, mother of pearl and semi-precious stones. Transparencies interact with unexpected colours, such as turquoise, coral and opalescent yellow, creating trompe l’oeil effects.
