We first encountered the Verdant Resonance Tourbillon in person at the Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair, and it is one of those rare pieces that photographs simply cannot do justice. Memorigin, the Hong Kong watchmaker known for building its identity entirely around the tourbillon, has once again used its craft as a vehicle for something larger, a meditation on Chinese literati culture, rendered this time in an unmistakable wash of green.
The concept behind the watch draws on a centuries-old image, the scholar’s study perfumed with incense while a guzheng is played nearby, a pairing long regarded as the height of refined living among Chinese literati. Memorigin has translated that atmosphere onto the dial with remarkable technical ambition. At 9 o’clock, a three-dimensional guzheng sub-dial recreates the instrument string by string, each one individually formed from fine steel wire. The seconds hand itself is shaped to resemble a musician’s hand, sweeping across the strings as though playing an endless, silent melody. At the lower right, an incense burner motif sits beneath finely engraved luminous lines that suggest smoke curling upward, a quiet counterpoint to the guzheng’s movement. Seeing the two elements together on the wrist, in the metal rather than in a press image, is what convinced us this was worth writing about, the interplay of stillness and motion on such a small canvas is genuinely arresting.
The rest of the layout is just as considered, an off-centre time display at 12 o’clock balances the composition, while a free-sprung tourbillon rotates at 6 o’clock, adding both visual rhythm and technical substance, the free-sprung construction improves shock resistance and long-term rate stability. The movement architecture is boldly skeletonised and concentrated in the upper half of the case, exposed through a fully transparent caseback, yet the watch still comes in at roughly 9.2mm thick, a slim profile given how much mechanical complexity is on display.
Materials reinforce the concept rather than simply dressing it up. The case is built from luminous carbon fibre, prized in high-end watchmaking for its lightness and durability, and here infused with a luminous compound that glows faintly in darkness, an effect the brand likens to fireflies at night. It is paired with a deep green rubber strap and a green dial base that nods to bamboo and jade, materials long associated with Chinese scholars, while still reading as thoroughly contemporary on the wrist.
At HKD 39,800 (»5,000 USD), the Verdant Resonance Tourbillon sits at an accessible point for a piece with this level of hand-finishing and cultural narrative, and it is a strong example of why Memorigin continues to stand out among independent tourbillon makers, a brand willing to let a single dial tell a very specific, very local story, then execute it with real mechanical seriousness.
