PARMIGIANI FLEURIER GIVES ULTRA-CERMET A DEEP BLUE VOICE

THE TONDA PF SPORT CHRONOGRAPH ULTRA-CERMET MINERAL BLUE TURNS A THREE-YEAR MATERIAL EXPERIMENT INTO A QUIETLY CONFIDENT SPORTS CHRONOGRAPH.

Some watches announce themselves, while others let their materials do the talking. For 2026, Parmigiani Fleurier chooses the second path with the TONDA PF Sport Chronograph Ultra-Cermet Mineral Blue, a timepiece that treats material innovation as the starting point of the design.

Ultra-Cermet combines the hardness of an advanced ceramic with the character of titanium. With a 40% metal content, it keeps a cool, metallic feel on the wrist and reflects light with real clarity. Depending on the lighting, it shifts from anthracite to deep black, with faint blue reflections.

Getting there took more than three years of research. The material is sintered, meaning fine ceramic and titanium powders are compacted under heat and pressure without ever reaching melting point. Only the most homogeneous powders make the cut, and over 90% of production is discarded. The result reaches 1,450 HV on the Vickers scale, a level of scratch resistance that explains its use in aerospace and high-precision tooling. Machining it demands diamond tools and very tight tolerances.

Parmigiani Fleurier remains the first watchmaker to craft a complete timepiece in this material. The 42.5 mm case, fluted bezel, crown, chronograph pushers and pin buckle are all Ultra-Cermet, and the case alone is made of 73 components. Alternating polished and satin finishes let light travel across the surfaces without harsh contrast, so the watch looks strong but never loud. Water resistance is 100 metres.

Colour is used sparingly, the satin dial blends Blackor and Mineral Blue tones, absorbing light and releasing it with depth. Hand-applied 18-carat gold appliques, Blackor-plated and luminescent, keep the dial easy to read. The Mineral Blue rubber strap has a subtly textured, almost textile-like surface and closes with an Ultra-Cermet pin buckle, carrying the case’s architecture through to the last point of contact.

Inside beats the COSC-certified PF070 manufacture calibre, running at 36,000 vibrations per hour with a 65-hour power reserve. It has 288 components and 42 jewels, yet measures just 6.95 mm thick. Through the sapphire case back you can see satin-finished open-worked bridges and a skeletonised 22-carat rose gold oscillating weight, polished and sandblasted.

This chronograph suits a collector who wants a sports watch without the usual noise, one that moves easily between active days, travel and evenings out. It pairs technical credentials with restraint, and Ultra-Cermet’s scratch resistance means it should look the same years from now as it does today.
